Another Ocean Recovery Success – Sentimental Ring Found in Waist-Deep Water at the Jersey Shore

It was a beautiful afternoon on the Jersey Shore when Megan reached out in distress — she had just lost a very sentimental ring in the ocean and was hoping I could help.

I explained that the chances of a successful recovery depend heavily on how accurately the location can be identified. Luckily, Megan had seen the ring fall from her finger in waist-deep water, right near her feet. I advised her to immediately mark the location in Google Maps, take shoreline reference photos, and note the exact time of the loss — all critical steps for ocean recoveries.

At first, she said she needed to think it over. But just minutes later, Megan called back — she was ready to give it a shot. We agreed to meet later that night at low tide, around 9 p.m., just before rough surf was forecasted to move in.

When I arrived, Megan’s mom, Erin, met me at the dune walkover. We headed out onto the beach to the area Megan had marked. I began my search along the tide line, hoping the ring had washed up or settled near the surface. After several passes and cross-checking Megan’s photos and timestamps, everything lined up perfectly — but still no signal.

The waves were rough, and a strong rip current made it difficult to search beyond the shell drop. After taking a break, I explained the conditions to Erin and my wife, who was assisting. I seriously considered ending the search for the night — a major storm was expected by sunrise — but something told me to give it one more try.

As the tide pulled back and the surf briefly calmed, I got back into the water and focused my search just below the shell line. Then it happened — a loud, clean signal rang out from my detector. I dug in with my scoop and came up with it:

Megan’s ring — safe and sound.

I shouted in excitement as Erin came running over in disbelief. She immediately called Megan, screaming into the phone, “He found it! I can’t believe it! Get down here!” The joy and relief on that beach were unforgettable.

After a few photos and hugs, we said our goodbyes around 11 p.m. — soaked, sandy, tired… but absolutely thrilled.
