Lost Cross Recovered in Surf City, LBI – NJ Ring Finder Edward Trapper Finds Sentimental Jewelry in the Sand

I recently received a message from Erin, who was hoping I could help recover a deeply sentimental gold cross that had been lost four days earlier in Surf City on Long Beach Island. Her son Wyatt had been wearing it during a school field day when it disappeared in the sand.

This wasn’t just any necklace — it had been passed down from Erin’s mother to her brother over 25 years ago. It had remained safely stored away for decades, until recently being gifted to Wyatt for his 15th birthday. Needless to say, it carried tremendous family meaning.

We talked through all the details, and based on the location and the fact that it wasn’t a heavily trafficked part of the beach, I told her there was still a real chance of recovery — even after several days.

Despite it being Mother’s Day weekend, we arranged for me to begin the search bright and early — 5:30 a.m. on Mother’s Day morning. Erin and Wyatt had dropped a pin on Google Maps to help guide me to the exact area where he thought the cross had been lost.

I started scanning a section about half a block long, covering the general area and the paths Wyatt had taken on and off the beach. After multiple passes, including a thorough check near the dune walkway, there was still nothing. I noticed that the beach rake had already come through, so I expanded the search zone to the south and east.

Then — about 20 feet east of the original spot — I heard it:
A sweet signal. The kind that gets your heart racing.

I dug in carefully… and there it was: Wyatt’s lost cross, shining up at me from the sand.

At that exact moment, Erin texted to ask if she should stop by. I didn’t tell her yet. When she arrived, we talked about the search, and I said:

“This would make a pretty great Mother’s Day gift… if I can find it.”

Then I reached into my pocket and held it out — the cross.

She was stunned. Tears welled up as she explained how much this necklace meant to their family. It had now passed through three generations, and thanks to this recovery, it was safely back in Wyatt’s hands where it belonged.
